Describe facts before assigning a cover label
GOV.UK states the general requirement for motor insurance when driving on UK roads. Quotezone discusses off-road and green-laning uses as specialist matters. Together, these sources justify separate questions; they do not establish the legal status of a particular lane or the terms of your policy.
Record the route/site, whether it is an organised venue, the activity, frequency and drivers. Keep normal road journeys visible as well. An unsurfaced appearance is not a reliable way to decide route status, access rights or whether motor vehicles may use it. Check local access information and any restrictions with the appropriate authority or landowner.
Access and insurance answer different questions
Landowner permission or an event booking addresses one aspect of access. It does not prove that your motor policy includes the activity. Conversely, a provider's answer about insurance does not grant a right to use land. A site waiver or organiser's instructions should not be substituted for the actual insurance documents.
Ask whether the proposed activity and location are included, whether there are requirements about drivers or organised events, and which losses are excluded. Describe paid recovery, competitions or timed activity separately. Keep the discussion specific instead of asking only whether "off-road" is covered.
Use the worksheet without mistaking it for authorisation
Select all intended use categories in the preparation tool. If an activity question remains unresolved, the output keeps it open and does not present the comparison route as an answer. A checked status records your own preparation, not an inspection or verification by this website.
If use changes on an existing arrangement, contact the current insurer before relying on it for the new activity. Ask for an effective date and any written conditions. Keep official access, current roadworthiness and appropriate cover as independent checks.
Your working list
- Describe each kind of route and actual activity
- Check access and restrictions separately
- Keep normal road journeys in the use description
- Ask about the named site/activity and exclusions
- Retain unresolved matters until confirmed
What remains outside this guide
This guide does not determine access rights, a lane's legal classification, roadworthiness or the cover provided by an individual policy.
