Know why the distinction matters
GOV.UK describes a kit-built vehicle as one whose parts are supplied new by the manufacturer. Its kit-converted guidance covers a kit added to an existing vehicle or old parts added to a new kit. These official categories are more precise than informal club or seller descriptions.
If unsure, ask the authority rather than choosing the category that seems preferable. The two pages describe evidence and registration conditions; our tool does not calculate a number prefix or declare a build eligible. Keep any actual decision with the vehicle file.
Create a document index
The kit-built guidance lists a parts statement, type-approval evidence, receipts, plans and relevant reconditioned-part evidence. The kit-converted guidance adds the original V5C and photographs among its records. Read the applicable page for the actual requirements and check changes before an application.
A practical index can group kit supplier records, donor paperwork, chassis/body, engine, major components, work by others and official documents. Note where each original is held. Keep dates and photographs to distinguish completed work from a proposed configuration. Do not upload these identifying records to this preparation site.
Prepare the insurance description separately
Quotezone's kit-car service concerns bespoke self-build/component vehicles. Prepare the actual build configuration, current stage and intended use for the provider, including later changes. An official registration record is not necessarily a complete insurance description.
Keep unknown components unresolved until checked. A previous-owner invoice or donor identity does not prove every part is now in the car. If documents and installed parts disagree, clarify that rather than copying a familiar model label into a form.
Your working list
- Identify the relevant official vehicle category
- Index kit, donor and component evidence
- Keep plans, photos and official decisions
- Check records against the fitted configuration
- Prepare a separate insurer description
What remains outside this guide
This guide does not predict current, age-related or Q registration, validate a donor vehicle or inspect components.
This referral is for discussing a kit car. If your vehicle is still being built, stored or awaiting approval, confirm a stage-specific route with a provider first.
